Why Prep Work Is the Real Secret to a Lasting Exterior Paint Job

Most people think the paint is what makes a paint job good. It's not. It's everything that happens before the first coat ever goes on. Power washing, scraping loose paint, caulking gaps, priming bare wood - skip any of that and it doesn't matter how expensive the paint is. It's going to fail.

Here's what we're working with on this one - a multi-story home with a mix of siding conditions. Some areas were holding up fine, others had paint peeling away from the trim and bare wood showing right at the window surrounds. Those spots are the first to let moisture in, and once water gets behind the siding, you've got a much bigger problem than a bad paint job.

So we start at the foundation of the work. Loose paint gets scraped off completely. Gaps and exposed wood get caulked and sealed tight. Any surface that needs it gets primed before a single drop of finish coat touches it. It's slower, and it adds time to the job - but that's the only way to get a result that holds up for years instead of peeling off in one winter.

We're right in the middle of this one. The prep is underway top to bottom, from the soffit line all the way down to the lower level.
