Those old glued-up ceiling tiles had to go. They were dated, they were tired, and they were hiding what could be a clean, modern ceiling underneath. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a room full of character thanks to the knotty pine wood paneling, but a ceiling that was dragging the whole space down.
Demo is always the messiest part of a job like this. Once the tiles came down, we were looking at the bare joists and insulation above - the full picture of what we had to work with. Everything in the room got covered and masked off properly before a single piece of drywall went up. Drop cloths on the furniture, plastic sheeting along the walls, green tape at the ceiling line. We don't skip that part.
With the room protected, we hung new drywall across the entire ceiling. After that comes the finishing work - taping, mudding, sanding until the surface is smooth and ready for paint. That process matters a lot. A flat ceiling finish will show every flaw if the prep isn't done right, so we take our time with it.
The final coat was a flat white - the right call for a ceiling like this. Flat finish hides surface imperfections better than any sheen, and white reflects light in a way that opens a room up. Against the warm tones of that pine paneling, the clean white ceiling creates a contrast that makes the whole space feel bigger and brighter without touching a single wall.
It's one of those upgrades that sounds simple but completely changes how a room feels. If you've got old ceiling tiles that have seen better days, swapping them out for fresh drywall and a clean paint job is one of the best things you can do for a space.
