Some rooms just feel heavy. Dark walls, low light, and a color that absorbs everything instead of reflecting it - it adds up. The homeowner here knew something felt off about the space but wasn't sure exactly what to do about it. That's where a color consultation makes a real difference.
We worked through the options together and landed on a lighter, warmer neutral that would work with the natural light coming in from the sliding door and the recessed lighting overhead. Color looks different depending on the light in a room, so getting that right before committing is important. Swatching on the wall first, not just looking at a chip, is part of our process for exactly that reason.
The before setup shows what we were working with - a deep taupe on the walls and ceiling that absorbed most of the light in the room. Heavy color on the ceiling especially tends to make a space feel lower and smaller than it actually is. Going lighter on both the walls and ceiling at the same time creates a much more noticeable shift.
The finished room speaks for itself. The stone fireplace, white trim, and the natural light from outside all pop a lot more against the new color. Nothing in the room changed except the paint - and yet the whole space reads differently. That's the thing about color. It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost changes you can make to a home.
If you've got a room that feels closed in or just doesn't feel right, it's worth having a conversation about color before assuming you need a bigger fix. Sometimes the answer really is that straightforward.
